New Geneva High School
I will get pictures of the new high school in October 2008.

Geneva High School is a four-year comprehensive school. The Geneva Area City School District is a combination of small towns, villages and rural settings. With a population of 6,700 citizens, Geneva is the largest municipality in the district. The community is truly the foundation of the system, as is evidenced by the long tradition of support for the schools.

Geneva High School serves a diverse population which now numbers 96.8% Caucasian, 2.2% Hispanic/Latino, 0.7% Afro-American, 0.2% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 0.1% Multi-Racial. Geneva High School has an enrollment of 1,050 students with 249 graduating seniors for the 1999-2000 school year. It is accredited by the State of Ohio and the North Central Association.

Brief History

GHS School History

(From the 1955 Aquila)

No doubt the log school house that stood on Eagle Hill on the South Ridge was the first school in Geneva.  This was built fall of 1867.

The first brick school building was erected fourteen years later [1881] where the Geneva Post Office now stands [the old post office on Broadway].  The teacher was paid two dollars a month, and was given board.

The Geneva Normal, built in 1868, was a four story building located behind the grade school building.  It was known as the White Normal.

The present grade school building was erected in 1889 and was remodeled in 1939.

The old high school building, erected in 1884, stood where the present one now stands.  In 1925 the cornerstone of the present high school was laid and the building was completed in 1925.

In 1954 ground was broken for a new high school on Sherman Street Extension.  This building is to house the four upper grades.  The planms include provisions for future expansion.  At the present, a gym, auditorium and one wing for classrooms is being constructed.   In the future another wing is to be added as the need demands.  Ample parking space in the rear of the building will be provided for all commuters, students, and teachers.  An architect’s design will be found at the front and rear of this annual.  Completion of this building is anticipated to be sometime in 1956.

OLD GENEVA HIGH
The present Geneva Elementary School Building was built in 1924. The Building was first known as Geneva High School, housing students in Grades 7-12. In 1959 when the present high school building opened, the current Geneva Elementary School became Geneva Junior High School. During the 1969-70 school year the new Junior High School opened, making way for the present building to become an elementary school re-named Geneva Elementary School. Geneva Elementary School currently has an enrollment of 450 students and a staff of 54 teachers, aids, custodians, and cafeteria workers.

PLATT R. SPENCER SCHOOL
Spencer Elementary is located five miles south of Lake Erie in Geneva, Ohio. Approximately 550 students from Geneva-on-the-Lake and Geneva Township are enrolled.

Spencer School was built in 1924. It was originally called East Geneva Rural School. In 1937 the name was changed to Platt R. Spencer School in honor of Platt Rogers Spencer who lived and taught in Geneva and founded the Spencerian method of penmanship.

The school began as a Grade School/High School but in 1961, due to consolidation into the Geneva Area City School district, became a K-6 elementary school.

I remember how difficult it was for the Spencer students to accept transfering to GHS. Hopefully, someone will share some Spencer memories.

AUSTINBURG HIGH SCHOOL
The older part of the present day Austinburg Elementary building was constructed as a high school and dedicated in 1938. Previous to that, the area high school students attended Grand River Institute, which is still across the street from Austinburg Elementary.

In l955, the primary wing was added to the school, and students in grades K-12 attended under one roof. When Austinburg consolidated with Geneva Schools in 1961, the school became known as Austinburg Elementary, housing students in grades K-6 only.

Austinburg currently has approximately 345 students, including twelve to fourteen students in our handicapped preschool program, which is entering its fourth year. In 1998, an elevator was constructed in our building to meet state guidelines for handicapped accessibility.
